I would like to start this blog
just by introducing the most foundational and fascinating aspect of fitness,
neuromuscular coordination. Without it, no other component of fitness can be
developed and from it all favorable outcomes in sport and fitness arise. If you
look in any kinesiology textbook or search online for what basic topics
comprise what is known as fitness or for the “components of fitness,” you will
inevitably be introduced to 5 basic elements. The five classic components of
fitness as defined by the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) are;
Cardiovascular Fitness, Muscular Strength, Muscular Endurance, Flexibility and
Body Composition. It is not necessary to go into depth exploring either any one
of these components to know that it is not possible to willfully make
improvements in any of these areas through training without the most important
and yet most often neglected missing component of fitness, the neurological.
For more info on why this is so
important check out Daniel Wolpert of Cambridge University’s video on the
importance of movement and brain function;
